Courses, Teaching and Books
Rosie has over 20 years experience designing, establishing and running courses and drawing and painting workshops in botanical art. She teaches a variety of courses at her studio in South Devon, catering for groups, individual students and distance learners. Rosie was one of the first botanical art teachers to be advertised via the SBA newsletter and many of her students have gone on to win prestigious awards such as RHS medals.
She runs regular courses at her studio near Totnes, Devon, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There are three 8-week terms with breaks for holidays and half-terms. The courses cater for beginners, improvers and advanced students and offer the basic principles of botanical art. The course work includes observational drawing, colour theory, watercolour and coloured pencil techniques, composition and presentation.
Rosie and her colleague, Meriel Thurstan, will be tutors on a week's painting holiday in Brittany in April 2013. Suitable for beginners and improvers, both landscape and botanical painting will be on offer. There will be a Gala Candlelight Dinner in Chateau Kergroadez on the final night.
Rosie and Meriel are the principal illustrators and authors of four books. 'Botanical Illustration course with the Eden Project' was published in 2006 by Batsford and was voted Practical Art Book of the Year by readers of Artists' Choice, Leisure Painter and The Artist.
This was followed in 2008 by 'Contemporary Botanical Illustration', again chosen as Practical Art Book of the Year. In 2009, 'Natural History Painting' was published, and the latest addition to the bookshelves was 'Exotic Botanical Painting' (2012).
